The 59th edition of the New York Film Festival officially kicked off on Friday evening with our Opening Night selection: the world premiere of Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, presented by Campari.
Starring Denzel Washington in the title role, this latest adaptation of The Scottish Play has been hailed by Indiewire as a “dark lucid dream of a film,” while Variety notes that the film “doesn’t just echo the look of old films, Coen echoes the atmosphere, the spirit beneath the look––the chiaroscuro psychology, with shadows dancing around castle sets that are like something out of a fairy tale, and looming, sealed-in spaces where a shaft of light can reflect a character’s state of being.” Frances McDormand co-stars as Lady Macbeth, and the supporting cast features Bertie Carvel, Brendan Gleeson, Corey Hawkins, Kathryn Hunter, Moses Ingram, Harry Melling, Stephen Root, and many more.
