Eastern Promise: Popular Cinema from China

Eastern Promise will showcase recent “popular Chinese cinema.” – films that sometimes play to audiences of tens of millions without being distributed internationally. The film series features a fascinating selection ranging in style from tender melodramas to sweeping epics, including the spectacular star-studded THE FOUNDING OF THE REPUBLIC.

Eastern Promise is organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Columbia University and Consulate General of China in New York.

ETERNAL MOMENT (Jiang Ai) (2011) 103min

Three romantic scenarios, three styles: an affluent married couple in Beijing, a luckless single Shanghai mother, and a spark of desire in France make up ETERNAL MOMENT – named after the popular television series.

Ethnic films—works focusing on non-Han citizens of China—have always been popular favorites, and here the magnificent snow-covered landscapes of western China serve as a backdrop for a tender, music-filled love story between two singers.

THE FOUNDING OF A REPUBLIC (Jian guo da ye) (2009) 138min

This epic chronicle of Chairman Mao’s rise marked the 60th anniversary of the PRC’s founding with wartime intrigue and star cameos (including Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Zhang Ziyi).

50 Years of the New York Film Festival

Each week the Film Society of Lincoln Center will screen a notable film at the Walter Reade Theater from every year of the New York Film Festival leading up the 50th edition of NYFF.

HAMLET (1964) 140min

Director: Grigori Kozintsev

Country: Soviet Union

Arguably the most cinematic Shakespeare on film, director Grigori Kozintsev’s radical adaptation of Hamlet began life as a 1954 stage production at Leningrad’s Pushkin Theatre, based on a translation by Doctor Zhivago author Boris Pasternak. For the film version, Kozinstev drastically condensed the original text and (in stark contrast to the celebrated Laurence Olivier version) chose to emphasize Hamlet’s profile as a public political figure over and above his inner, existential conflict. The result is a Hamlet like no other, rooted in a brilliant performance by legendary Russian actor Innokenty Smoktunovsky, magnificently photographed in black-and-white CinemaScope by cameraman Jonas Gritsius, and featuring a stirring original score by Dimitri Shostakovich.

HAMLET screens at the Walter Reade Theater on Tuesday, October 18 at 6:30PM.

Marco Bellocchio’s explosive debut feature—a macabrely funny, full frontal assault on Catholic family values and other forms of Italian patriarchy—has lost none of its sting, or its brilliant filmmaking fervor, in the five decades since its original release. In a ferocious performance of Brando-like physicality, 22-year-old Lou Castel stars as Alessandro, the scion of a once-prominent Italian family now languishing in a state of grotesque lethargy. Systematically, he attempt to rid his brother Augusto—the only family member not afflicted by blindness, epilepsy or madness—of all that stands between him and a life of freedom.

Part film festival, part think-tank, and part jamboree, Mountainfilm in Telluride provides a rich and varied slate of programming with an emphasis on adventure, exploration, and the environment. The Film Society presents highlights from the film festival in a three-day series that will include screenings, conversations and demonstrations.

THE APPLE PUSHERS (2011) 72min

Country: USA

THE APPLE PUSHERS tells the story of New York City fruit and vegetable vendors faced with the challenge of bringing fresh produce to neighborhoods that have traditionally been nutritionally neglected. It is tough work but the men and women— all immigrants—who take on this tough task do it with dignity and focus.

Directed by Andrew Wonder, UNDERCITY is a short documentary that follows Steve Duncan as he shows us some of the city’s secrets and introduces us to some of the peculiar characters that that lurk below the streets. Not content to explore underground, Duncan sets his sights on some hard-to-reach landmarks above—way above—ground as he shows us the city from angles rarely before seen.

KADOMA (2010) 44min

Country: USA

KADOMA recounts the tragic and final kayaking trip “Kadoma” for Hendri Coetzee, a legendary South African kayaker who explored some of Africa’s wildest rivers. In December of 2010 American pro kayakers Chris Korbulic and Ben Stookesbury followed Coetzee into the Democratic Republic of Congo for a first descent of the dangerous Lukuga River where Coetzee was attacked by a fifteen-foot crocodile and was never seen again.

A PERFECT SOLDIER (2011) 56min

Country: USA

Film focuses on Aki Ra who was kidnapped as a child and conscripted to serve in Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge army, After surviving two decades of wartime soldiering, Aki Ra is now living a very different life, having turned his energies towards eradicating land mines in his country, work that has garnered him a CNN Heroes award.

Producer Richard Fitoussi will participate in a post screening Q&A.

 

RIGHT TO PLAY (2011) 41min

Country: USA

Filmmaker Frank Marshall who has produced huge Hollywood films such as the Indiana Jones and Jason Bourne series goes in a very different direction with his short documentary, RIGHT TO PLAY. The film is about Johann Olav Koss, the brilliant Norwegian gold medalist speed skater who has started an organization called Right to Play, which is dedicated to, as their mission statement says: “improving the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the world by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace.”

Director Frank Marshall will participate in a post screening Q&A.

EEL/WATER/ROCK/MAN (2010) 7min

Director: Hal Clifford & Jason Houston

Country: USA

The short film captures the Delaware River as it flows around, past and through an ancient stone weir designed by a decidedly old-school fisherman to catch migrating eels. The moving river creates a sound like applause—a rippling, bubbling, liquid ovation—for the virtues of patience, acceptance, and devotion. 

Directors Jason Houston and James Prosek will participate in a post-screening Q&A.

 

ONE PLASTIC BEACH (2010) 8min

Director: Eric Slatkin & Tess Thackara

Country: USA

Documentary looks at Judith Selby Lang and Richard Lang and the plastic trash they have collected along a one-kilometer stretch of beach in Northern California as well as the art they produce with it: sculptures and abstract prints reminiscent of Paul Klee and Henri Matisse that feature 1949-vintage toys, Korean lighters, Astroturf (a common find), bubble blowers and hair curlers.

 

MY TOXIC REALITY (2011) 5min

Director: Tom Dusenbery

Country: USA

MY TOXIC REALITY profiles Hilton Kelly, one of the winners of the Goldman Environmental Prize, who saw a need for someone to take a stand in his community of Port Arthur, Texas, a place where eight petrochemical refining facilities loom over that town’s residential areas. After spending years learning all he could about policies governing industrial pollution, he galvanized his community to take action: to clean up historical damage and degradation and protect against future threats.
 

SPOIL (2011) 44min

Director: Trip Jennings

Country: USA

Filmmaker Trip Jennings (whose film FLATHEAD WILD played at Lincoln Center last year) returns with SPOIL, a film in which he follows the International League of Conservation Photographers and the Gitga’at First Nation people of British Columbia in their search for the illusive spirit bear. All white, but not albino, and rarer than the panda, the spirit bear lives only in the Great Bear Rainforest on the north coast of British Columbia, a place that is at risk from a proposed oil pipeline.

Screening will be followed by a conversation with M. Sanjayan of The Nature Conservancy.

HAPPY (2011) 80min

Roko Belic—a longtime Mountainfilm regular who along with his brother Adrian is one of the filmmakers behind GENGHIS BLUES—directs a documentary about the all-so-essential state of happiness that is infused with wisdom and warmth, and abounds with life lessons. Filmed in more than fourteen countries, the film takes us around the world looking for universal truths about happiness, inquiring of scientists and surfers alike.

Director Roko Belic will participate in a post screening Q&A.

ALONE ON THE WALL, one of Sender Films’s First Ascent series, follows Alex Honnold as he completes two ground-breaking projects: free soloing Zion’s Moonlight Buttress and Yosemite’s Half Dome. In the world of climbing, free soloing is rare, and in the world of free soloing, nobody else attempts such big walls. His climbing is exceptional, but it’s his composure, focus and utter calm that make such an impression.

 

CHASING WATER (2011) 19min

Country: USA

Photojournalist Peter McBride documents the flow of the Colorado River from source to sea. A Colorado native, McBride hails from a ranching family that depends on the Colorado for irrigation, and this is the story of his backyard. Writer John Waterman joins McBride on this 1,500-mile journey, one that shows how the thirst of the 30 million that the Colorado supports takes an unhealthy toll.

The film follows the path and struggle of cavers who squeeze through impossibly constricted spaces, exhaling everything in their lungs to make their bodies improbably flat, feeling their heartbeats thud into intractable rock, or holding themselves up by nothing more than their armpits in an effort to discover a dazzling underworld chamber of secrets and experience one of our world’s few final frontiers.
 

TOWERS OF THE ENNEDI (2010) 15min

Renan Ozturk (Mountainfilm 2009 selection, SAMSARA, which won the Charlie Fowler Award) now heads to the remote and sun-flattened landscape of the Ennedi Desert in northeastern Chad. Ozturk and veteran climber Mark Synnott—known more for his far-flung adventures than his technical accomplishments—bring young climbing stars Alex Honnold and James Pearson to the Ennedi to explore its untouched landscapes. Together, Synnott, Honnold, and Pearson endure a long, bumpy drive across the sand flats of a godforsaken country to reach an incredible destination: gardens of towers filled with graceful fingers of rock, bottle-shaped formations and lithe arches.

 

TREEVERSE (2011) 27min

Country: USA

The two men in this new documentary from Uncage the Soul Productions attempt to traverse 1 kilometer of old-growth forest by climbing through the canopy of its trees. Brian French and Will Koomjian embark on the journey—conceived over a beer at the pub—with aplomb and humor. Armed with advanced climbing gear the two take several hours to send their final crux traverse, moving from tree to tree a distance that would take minutes on the ground.

WITH MY OWN TWO WHEELS (2010) 44min

Country: USA

Film tells the story of four people whose lives have been deeply changed by bikes. In Africa we meet a visiting nurse who sees infinitely more patients after he acquires a bike; we also meet a remarkable woman who overcomes serious physical handicaps to become the best bike mechanic in her town. In India having a bike makes the difference between whether or not a young girl will be able to go to school; and in America the film looks at a bike shop that is started to help troubled kids stay off the streets.

Co-Director Jacob Seigel-Boettner will participate in a post screening Q&A and there will be a special presentation by World Bicycle Relief Founder FK Day.

COLD (2011) 20min

Country: USA

Of the seventeen efforts to ascend an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan in winter only one has been successful. That winter ascent of Gasherbrum II by Simone Moro, Denis Urubko, and Cory Richards is the subject of COLD. Filmed by Richards and written from his perspective, this is a very personal and frank portrayal of the risks and rigors of high-altitude mountaineering.

 

Into the Silence

Presentation by Wade Davis

George Mallory is one of the great mountaineers in the history and what actually happened on his attempt to climb Mt. Everest is still one of the great mysteries in the sport. Acclaimed historian, anthropologist, and author Wade Davis (The Serpent and the Rainbow) has dedicated ten years of his life to writing what will surely become the definitive book on Mallory. To Davis, Mallory is much more than an alpinist with big dreams but rather a symbol of a generation that was ravaged by WWI and picked up the pieces to not only dream big but achieve their impossible goals.

The presentation by Wade Davis will be followed by a book signing in the Furman Gallery of the Walter Reade Theater.

The screening of COLD and Into the Silence presentation will take place on Sunday, October 23 at 4:30PM in the Walter Reade Theater.

THE BARBER OF BIRMINGHAM (2010) 26min

This short, carefully crafted and compelling film tells the story of James Armstrong, a barber in Birmingham who was one of thousands of unknown and unsung heroes of the civil rights struggle of the ’60s.

THE 10 CONDITIONS OF LOVE (2009) 60min

Director: Jeff Daniels

Country: Australia

Film profiles Rebiya Kadeer, the exiled leader of the Uyghur people who live in her East Turkistan homeland, which is officially China’s Xinjiang Province. After spending six years in a Chinese prison for “terrorism,” Kadeer now lives in the U.S., where she stages a relentless human-rights campaign for her people. Three of her sons have been imprisoned by China, and this personal cost is too much for her daughter, Raela Tosh, who rues the pain her mother’s activism has caused to the family. Kadeer is so controversial that Chinese nationalists tried to stop the world premiere of this film at the Melbourne Film Festival by destroying the festival’s computer system.

Country: USA

Longtime filmmakers Beth and George Gage (Mountainfilm 2011 selection BIDDER 70) traveled to New York City to tell the story of several women who lost their husbands on September 11, 2001. The film shows how these widows, many of them married to firefighters, have moved forward with their lives bravely and the best they can in the ten years since that hellish day.

MR. HAPPY MAN profiles Johnny Barnes – one of the happiest people in the world with the goal in life to share that happiness. The humble and lovable Bermudan wakes up at 3:00AM every morning and heads to one particularly busy intersection to stand, wave, blow kisses and shout, “I love you!” to passers-by.

MBAMBU AND THE MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON (2010) 55min

Director: Lucian & Natasa Muntean

Country: Serbia

The film focus on a 16-year-old girl with grand ambitions who lives at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda. She is an actress, an aspiring mountain guide and hopes to be the first in her family to complete secondary school. If Mbambu becomes a guide in the Rwenzoris—an impressive accomplishment in its own right, as the mountains reach to nearly 17,000 feet—she would break all sorts of cultural and societal barriers for women in Uganda. The film was oneis one of five projects to receive the inaugural Mountainfilm Commitment Grant in 2010.

The Women’s Film Preservation Fund

The Film Society of Lincoln Center presents the premiere of three landmark 16mm films restored by The Women’s Film Preservation Fund, a project of New York Women in Film & Television. In MAKE OUT, a couple kisses while a voiceover reveals the young woman’s inner thoughts. The influential GROWING UP FEMALE lyrically examines how cultural institutions shape American women. And in the powerful personal documentary JANIE’S JANIE, a woman learns she must take control of her own life after years of abuse.

The screenings will be followed by a filmmakers panel discussion.

MAKE OUT, GROWING UP FEMALE and JANIE’S JANIE will screen Monday, October 24 at 6:30PM at the Walter Reade Theater.

An Evening with Julia Solomonoff

Latinbeat presents two feature films and two shorts by Argentine-born, New-York-based writer/director/producer Julia Solomonoff, followed by a conversation with Film Society Program Director Richard Peña. In SISTERS, two sisters exiled from Argentina, Natalia (Ingrid Rubio) and Elena (Valeria Bertuccelli), are reunited in suburban Texas in 1984 and learn secrets about their late father and the military dictatorship back home. Inspired by her childhood, Solomonoff’s beautifully photographed second feature THE LAST SUMMER OF THE BOYITA is the tender coming-of-age story of Jorgelina, who finds refuge from family changes in her country playmate, Mario.

FSLC’s popular Scary Movies film series returns with a collection of hair-raising premieres and fright classics. The schedule of films includes highlights such as the first New York showings of Ben Wheatley’s genre-crossing KILL LIST, Ti West’s supernatural caper THE INNKEEPERS, Scott Leberecht’s fresh take on vampirism MIDNIGHT SON, and the deliciously grotesque multiple-director omnibus THE THEATRE BIZARRE, as well as Mariano Baino’s 1993 nunsploitation film, DARK WATERS.

Scary Movies will also offer a very rare live-stage performance in concert with the films screened, as FSLC presents a special live performance of  “Nevermore,” Jeffrey Combs’s one-man portrayal of the Father of Gothic Horror, Edgar Allan Poe, directed by Stuart Gordon and written by Dennis Paoli. The performance will mark the first-ever staging in New York City. The presentation of “Nevermore” will help kick off a Halloween dedicated Poe, including screenings of Stuart Gordon’s “The Black Cat” from the Masters of Horror season 2, as well as the Roger Corman/Vincent Price gem HOUSE OF USHER.
