Making its world premiere as the Opening Night film of the 55th New York Film Festival, Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying is a lyrical road movie, as funny as it is heartbreaking. The director and cast joined us to discuss their striking meditation on the passage of time and the nature of truth. First up, before his On Cinema talk with NYFF’s Director of Programming, Kent Jones, Richard Linklater reminisces about bringing SubUrbia to the festival two decades ago and why he deeply believes in the eternal lifespan of cinema.
The director also joined actors Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, and J. Quinton Johnson, and co-writer Darryl Ponicsan for a press conference in which they opened up about the psychological and physical toll of war, the process of grief, and witnessing the 2016 presidential election during production. Lastly, they all hit the Opening Night red carpet to discuss the balance of patriotism and government critique in the film, the honor of premiering a film at NYFF, and more.
