Sound + Vision Live: Rokenri + Jesse R. Berlin Sing Their Classic Hits
Rokenri is a Red Hook, Brooklyn–based avant-rock trio made up of Tigue’s Matt Evans and Anawan’s Trevor Wilson and Ethan Woods. Following in the footsteps of other art-minded rock freaks such as Talking Heads, Can, and The Residents, their goal is to make esoteric music more broadly appealing. Rokenri’s songs are a Dada cosmic fusion of R+R and electronic anime, with cut-up surrealist lyrics; vague, gooey marshmallow centers; and catchy melodies aplenty. Rokenri is currently working on their debut album, with an expected release in Spring 2016.
For this show, Rokenri will be premiering new music and videos from their upcoming film project, Tube on the Way Under. This work sets Rokenri’s twisted sense of song craft and humor alongside imagery and dialogue that matches it tit for tat. Expect electro-ragas, dirty samples, disjointed rock, monologues about quicksand fetishists, and lots and lots of bug videos.
Jesse R. Berlin is a NYC-based musician, performance artist, and purveyor of his own unique brand of “slapstick disco.” His newest album, Glitter Lung, was released in August. He has received acclaim from PopMatters, AudioFemme, and The Village Voice, which very accurately referred to him as a “professional weirdo.” For his Sound + Vision Live performance, he will be debuting a collaboration with Baltimore-based, Emmy Award–winning animator and video artist Seth Mussey. He will probably take his clothes off.
Seth Mussey is a Baltimorean motion graphics artist, predominantly focusing on live animation for the past decade. He picked up an Emmy Award while working for five years in the Television industry, and has since focused purely on his personal aesthetic. He blames the development of his aesthetics on 80’s Fantasy films, The Brothers Grimm, Eyes Wide Shut and the World Wrestling Federation.
