Film in Education
Student Screenings and Artist Q&As
Education has been a cornerstone of Film at Lincoln Center (FLC) since its founding in 1969. FLC’s free student screening program engages students and educators with the art of international cinema in our theaters at Lincoln Center, accompanied by Q&As with the artists behind the films. Tailored study guides accompany each film, providing historical context, key themes, and discussion and reflection questions, and recommended resources such as book and film suggestions facilitate further study long after the credits roll.
Through this program, FLC aims to increase cultural competency by exposing students to different cultures and languages, cultivate empathy by showing diverse human stories, educate students about historical events, and inspire the next generation of cinephiles, while offering a direct connection to the artists behind the films or in adjacent professions, engaging in them dialogue that makes cinema feel personal and alive.
Professional Development for Educators
To meet a need in film education, and complement and deepen the value of our student screenings, FLC is undertaking a Professional Development program, which includes Professional Development Days for educators. Piloted in June 2025, FLC’s Professional Development Day offers concrete modes of learning and specialized instruction on how to use cinema as a tool in the classroom, focusing on visual literacy, language, history, cinema appreciation, and more. FLC aims to fully launch this initiative in 2026.
