Always an artist unafraid of turning the camera on himself—or at least an alter-ego—he carries on a kind of dialogue with the audience, egging them on to ask questions about the cinema and its purposes, either as a means to uncover a new reality, or as a powerful way of telling a story. In his inimitable way, the filmmaker’s questions only open up further questions.
