More than simply a mirror of contemporary Arab societies, the new cinema emerging across the Arab world has in many ways acted as a kind of weather vane, anticipating many of the themes and criticisms articulated in the recent events known as the “Arab Spring.” Three contemporary filmmakers, whose works are all featured in this series, will discuss the challenges facing the new cinema as it seeks to make its mark not only in the Arab world but indeed internationally.
