A ragtag bunch of volunteer bodyguards protect Dr. Sun Yat-Sen from assassination on a trip to Hong Kong in this old-school all-star extravaganza that racked up unprecedented Hong Kong Film Award nominations. Fighting for a cause they don’t fully understand, a group of local misfits led by teacher Chen Xiao-bai (Tony Leung Ka Fai) defend their leader, Sun Wen, from a group of assassins sent by the Qing Dynasty. The action unfolds mythically with scenes of lush melodrama, gritty martial arts sequences, and a lingering respect for those who sacrificed their lives. With an all-star cast including Donnie Yen and Mengke Bateer, the film blends history with fiction in a poetic ode to China’s past.
