After meeting them on the set of Confucius a year prior, Fei Mu penned an original screenplay for the creative team of Jacob and Luise Fleck, Austrian Jews who had joined many seeking refuge in Shanghai. A love triangle ensues when two men fall for the same woman and must idealistically resolve their differences in Fei Mu’s curious story. Fei Mu’s masterful film of seven years later, Spring in a Small Town, has roots in this wartime collaboration.
