New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
Comedy and drama collide as generations clash in this clever tale of wishful thinking, about a wayward screenwriter having his first film released and his father, who thinks he’s found buried treasure in the yard.
Comedy and drama collide in Xu Lei’s clever tale of wishful thinking and dashed dreams. Wayward screenwriter Wei Fei has been spending most of his days drinking when his father Lao Wei arrives unexpectedly. Lao Wei still lives in his home village, but has made the trek to the city with a piece of pottery found underneath his recently demolished home that may or may not be an actual treasure. As several days pass with Lao Wei trying to focus Wei Fei on the task at hand, he discovers his “successful” writer son may not be on the verge of breakthrough after all. But perhaps both father and son may be equally gullible and deluded about their dreams of fortune and fame. With wry humour and wit in spades, this is a heartwarmingly funny story that solidifies Xu Lei’s place as a force in new Chinese cinema.
