Home Sweet Home
Pai’s extraordinary ensemble story of homecoming uses different styles and split screens in tracing the fates of 15 characters after their plane lands in Taipei.
Pai Ching-jui, who studied filmmaking in Italy in 1962, was an important figure in the “healthy realism” of the period’s Taiwan cinema. In Home Sweet Home, Pai lends striking visual innovation to the stories of Taiwan students returning from the United States for the holidays. As some decide to stay, and others plan to put down roots abroad no matter the cost, the divergent stories come alive through split screens, jump cuts, and multiple narratives. An award-winner for best editing and lead actress.
