Following their 2014 sleeper Obvious Child, writer-director Gillian Robespierre, co-writer Elisabeth Holm, and star Jenny Slate reunite for this touching and funny look at dysfunctional New York families. It’s pre-cellphone Manhattan, 1995, and each member of the Jacobs family is on the cusp of some kind of existential crisis. When sisters Dana and Ali (Slate and Abby Quinn) suspect their father (John Turturro) may be cheating on their mother (Edie Falco), it sends them into a tailspin that reveals the cracks in the family facade. Landline is as much a portrait of a family in crisis as it is a love letter to a not-so-distant era. A Magnolia Pictures release.
