Inspired by the success of Oklahoma!, MGM employed seven writers to glorify the Fred Harvey chain of restaurants that conquered the Old West of the 1890s with clean tablecloths, clean silverware, and clean waitresses. Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer crafted an original score, including “Oh, You Kid” and the Academy Award-winning “On the Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa Fe.”
In a role envisioned for Ann Sothern or Lucille Ball, Angela Lansbury proved unforgettable as a dance-hall harlot—Judy’s competition for John Hodiak. Additional, entertaining specialties or comic sequences were mounted for Ray Bolger, Cyd Charisse, Marjorie Main, Virginia O’Brien, and Chill Wills
