The Hearing
New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
When a young village boy is involved in a crime, he is forced to testify in the ensuing court case without a sign language interpreter, despite being deaf and suffering from PTSD.
This searing courtroom drama centers on Lucas, a boy who’s deaf living in a remote fishing village, being raised with dignity thanks to those who care for him and respect his intelligence. As his mother slowly uncovers the truth of a crime he is involved in, they find themselves up against a system that’s indifferent at best and complicit at worst. Caught at the center of a case that rivets public attention, with few allies and no legal accommodations, Lucas is forced to testify without the aid of a sign language interpreter. An unflinching indictment of systemic failures and the silencing of vulnerable voices, particularly among deaf children in the Philippines, The Hearing is anchored by a remarkable performance from child actor Enzo Osorio as a boy determined to earn justice.
