June 18, 2017
Scorsese’s intimate documentary, filmed on Thanksgiving Day 1976, features the seminal rock group The Band’s farewell concert, accompanied by friends and music legends Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, and more.
After 16 years on the road, The Band gave their farewell concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976, accompanied by friends and music legends Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Van Morrison, and the Staples Singers. Filmed on a warmly lit stage with grand chandeliers and a set taken from the San Francisco Opera’s production of La Traviata, Scorsese’s intimate documentary captures a historical moment in rock history. Interspersing concert footage with studio segments and interviews with members of the group, The Last Waltz is an elegant, celebratory, and bittersweet farewell to the influential roots-rock group—and perhaps an entire era of music.
