Based on Paulo Giordano’s international best-seller, The Solitude of Prime Numbers follows two perennial loners—Mattia (Luca Marinelli) and Alice (Alba Rohrwacher)—as they try, separately and later together, to move beyond memories and feelings that continue to exert control on their lives. Set at four crucial moments in their lives, Costanzo’s adaptation (done in collaboration with the author) travels freely among these different moments, comparing the adult lives of Mattia and Alice with their early, formative experiences. A film not easily forgotten, this is a challenging work whose complex storytelling actually serves to make its emotional impact even more powerful.
