Screening as part of our Luís Buñuel retrospective, Buñuel in Spain.
Buñuel’s many admirers all over the world were shocked when he agreed to return to Franco’s Spain to direct a film—but few could have predicted the extraordinary result, least of all the Generalissimo. A young novice (Silvia Pinal) is called to the estate of her widower uncle (Fernando Rey); after the uncle unexpectedly dies, she takes over the property and tries to convert it into a haven for the destitute and afflicted, guided by Christian virtues—with unexpected consequences. Winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes.
