In this engrossing epic reconstruction of Italy’s 19th-century path to independence, two young aristocrats and a Sicilian peasant, inspired by the radical democratic ideas emanating from Paris, are drawn to Giuseppe Mazzini’s movement to unify their country. Plunged into the fearsome double binds of revolution and sacrifice, their personal and political allegiances are tested as they negotiate the unfolding history of Italy during the Risorgimento. On the 150th anniversary of Italian unification, Martone offers an incisive look back at the process of his country’s formation, and what it means today.
