When a friend misplaces a vital notebook, a boy must decide whether to obey his elders or his conscience, which takes him on a journey both spiritual and physical. Rich in visual symbolism, at once earnest and tinged with mischievous humor, and always potentially political, the film shows a multi-ethnic and geographically diverse Iran from a child’s point of view, without condescension or simplification. The trilogy’s first film showcases Kiarostami’s use of non-actors, as well as the centrality of the countryside and the journey to his oeuvre. Winner of the Bronze Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival.
