Writer-directors Paul Schrader and Alex Ross Perry are each coming off of a remarkable movie year; the former’s First Reformed, with Ethan Hawke, was his biggest artistic and commercial success in decades, and the latter’s Her Smell, with Elisabeth Moss, is one of the daring highlights of this year’s NYFF. Though both Schrader and Perry have most often directed their own screenplays, they also have had experience writing scripts that others have directed.
