The annual Cinema Eye Honors unveiled its nominations, spotlighting the year's non-fiction work. Five films received nominations for the Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking including New Directors/New Films '13 documentaries The Act of Killing by Jeff Oppenheimer and Stories We Tell by Sarah Polley. Also vying for the top prize, the Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking award are Martha Shane and Lana Wilson's After Tiller, which ran as a first-run at Film Society of Lincoln Center as well as Zachary Heinzerling's Cutie and the Boxer and Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel’s Leviathan.
In all, Cutie and the Boxer led with six nominations, while The Act of Killing received five Wednesday afternoon when the nominations were unveiled at the Film Society's Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center. Last year's top Cinema Eye prize went to 5 Broken Cameras by Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi.
Women filmmakers dominated the Director category Wednesday, marking the first time that more females received nominations than men. Shane and Wilson received a nomination for After Tiller, while Castaing-Taylor and Paravel did as well for Leviathan, Polley for Stories We Tell and Tinatin Gurchiani for The Machine Which Makes Everything Disappear. Also in the category are Oppenheimer for The Act of Killing and Alan Berliner for First Cousin Once Removed.
Cinema Eye unveiled its inaugural award for Nonfiction Films Made for Television, with HBO Documentary Films receiving four of six nominations in the category. This year's list includes: Lucy Walker’s The Crash Reel, Dawn Porter’s Gideon’s Army, Alex Gibney’s Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God and Sebastian Junger’s Which Way to the Front Line From Here: The Life and Times of Tim Hetherington. PBS nabbed the other two nominations, one for Susan Lacy’s Inventing David Geffen (American Masters) and Christine Turner’s Homegoings (POV). HBO Documentary Films' Sheila Nevins received four nominations, while Sara Bernstein received three. The new television award “recognizes the key producers from the network,” organizers noted.
Ten contenders were named for Cinema Eye’s Audience Choice Prize, which includes many of the most talked about and beloved documentaries of the year, including Morgan Neville’s 20 Feet From Stardom, Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Blackfish, Greg “Freddy” Camalier’s Muscle Shoals, Mona Eldaeif and Jehane Noujaim’s Rafea: Solar Mama, Dave Grohl’s Sound City and Jehane Noujaim’s The Square. The double nomination for Noujaim in the category was another first – a director with two films nominated in the same category in the same year.
Winners of the 7th Annual Cinema Eye Honors will be announced at a ceremony in early January 2014 in New York City. Details about this year’s ceremony, including date, venue and key sponsors, will be announced shortly.
The Cinema Eye Honors were founded in 2007 to recognize excellence in artistry and craft in nonfiction filmmaking. It was the first and remains the only international nonfiction award to recognize the whole creative team, presenting annual craft awards in directing, producing, cinematography, editing, composing and graphic design/animation.
