At a press conference moderated by critic and NYFF selection committee member Amy Taubin, the writer-director opened up about about crafting his singular characters; the tenderness and talent of Dustin Hoffman, Adam Sandler, and Ben Stiller; collaborating with Randy Newman; being inspired by the cinematography of Max Ophüls; and more.
