Eleanor Powell, George Murphy, Buddy Ebsen, Sophie Tucker, and fourteen year old Garland override the plot—will the champion horse win the purse to produce the show?—and supply the musical wallop, mostly to songs by Brown and Freed. These include Judy’s rip-roaring “Everybody Sing.” But the interpolated “Some of These Days” (Tucker) and the Roger Edens’ “Dear Mr. Gable” prelude to “You Made Me Love You” (Garland) have achieved iconic status. The latter was the first of many standards to become associated with Judy, and she sang it for the rest of her career.

Worth noting is some random bitchery by Binnie Barnes and a brief comic scene with Helen Troy as a health club administrator.
