Among his signature and most mesmerizing films, Caught in the Acts finds Raymond Depardon zeroing in on a seldom-depicted yet eminently important step in the French legal process. The film follows 14 suspects of various crimes who, in between leaving police custody and making their initial court appearance, must first meet with public prosecutors in order to be reminded of their rights and to hear whether they’ll be prosecuted for their charges. As ever, Depardon films this necessarily private, almost unbearably intimate social procedure with curiosity, a profound feeling for the gravity of these fateful conversations, and a palpable sensitivity to the suspects in legal limbo.
