A couple and their young daughter are plagued by a possessed doll in this startling J-horror opus by auteur Shinobu Yaguchi.
A master of genre filmmaking, Shinobu Yaguchi forays into classic J-horror territory with this twisty, hair-raising possession thriller. Yoshie (Masami Nagasawa) and her husband Tadahiko (Koji Seto) have a picture-perfect life with their 5-year-old daughter Mei. But when Mei dies suddenly, their idyllic existence is gone. While trying to cope, Yoshie finds an old, beautifully lifelike doll. Yoshie embraces the doll as a symbolic child and eventually feels able to bring a new baby into the world. When their second daughter Mai is born, the couple tuck the doll away. But when Mai finds it, increasingly bizarre and violent things begin to happen…. This inventive opus manifests Ringu meets Annabelle, inflected with a fresh Japanese folklore spin. While a departure from Yaguchi’s usual comic styling, it is imbued with his pulpy flare, while also grounded in classic horror tropes.

FLC announces James Gray’s Paper Tiger as the Opening Night selection of the 64th New York Film Festival, presented in partnership with Rolex. The film will make its North American premiere in a gala debut at Alice Tully Hall on Friday, September 25, with Gray and members of the cast and crew in attendance.
