Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’s cinematic landmark brings Shakespeare to Manhattan’s West Side, as Maria (Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer) fall in love despite the racially driven gang warfare that threatens the peace in their neighborhood. Shot on the city blocks that would soon after become Lincoln Center and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, West Side Story won 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, the most for any musical. It remains an almost unrivaled big-screen experience, especially in glorious 70mm!
