Flat Girls
New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
Inseparable since childhood, two teenage girls who grew up together in a housing complex for cops start to find their own identities as they face various challenges in this bittersweet coming-of-age tale.
Freethinking Ann and mousy Jane are inseparable. Daughters of police officers, the teenagers grew up together in a housing complex for cops. While all seems fine on the surface, both dream of one day escaping the “flats.” However, as Ann faces increasing economic and personal hardships, she soon finds herself desperate. At the same time Jane starts to discover her own true identity. After a new tenant enters the scene, secrets are revealed that send Ann and Jane into unexpected emotional territory. Will Jane be able to help Ann in her plight even if it means they may never see each other again? Starting off with lighthearted episodes of young camaraderie, the film transitions seamlessly to more serious topics with a refreshingly sophisticated dramatic arc. Making her feature debut, director Jirassaya Wongsutin deftly avoids melodramatic clichés for a poignant and novel coming-of-age tale marked by subtle and poetic storytelling.
