Parentless and struggling to survive, Jun-kang and his sister cross paths with another troubled teen as a hidden connection slowly surfaces in this haunting mystery about youth persevering through trauma and isolation.
Adolescent Jun-kang and his little sister struggle to survive without parents while still going to school and facing the threat of eviction. Meanwhile, another teenager in the same vicinity, Gi-su, is also alone and suffering. Are these young, abandoned souls somehow connected by a strange twist of fate? Inspired by an essay about the children of prisoners, writer-director Kim Sung-yoon’s feature debut is a dark yet tender portrayal of youth in the aftermath of trauma that focuses not so much on what happened, but how these children persevere in the face of adversity from all sides. This heart-wrenching mystery-drama rings with verisimilitude as if ripped from the headlines, while Kim’s cinematic boldness treats his characters with sympathy and compassion.
