In November 1985, on the occasion of the Cinémathèque Française’s 50th anniversary and the publication of the seminal book Jean-Luc Godard Par Jean-Luc Godard, and fresh off the completion of his films Détective and Hail Mary, Godard consented to a rare public discussion. He fields questions on cinema and its future (or lack thereof?), art, politics, and sundry other topics as only he can, as Raymond Depardon, along with various other filmmakers, documents the proceedings on 16mm. The resulting footage was only discovered by the Cinémathèque in 2023; now edited together into a cohesive work, this invaluable and sui generis artifact finds one master filmmaker engaging with and taking in the wisdom, riddles, and pronouncements of another.
