Lisa Lu Plays Herself
New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
At 98, Chinese American icon Lisa Lu tells her own story—from breaking barriers as James Stewart’s leading lady to transforming cinema from Hollywood to Hong Kong.
At 98, Lisa Lu just became the oldest person ever honored with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star. This intimate documentary captures the living legend—a three-time Golden Horse winner who blazed trails from Hollywood to Hong Kong across seven extraordinary decades—entirely through her own words. From starring opposite James Stewart to winning Taiwan’s highest honors for The Arch and The 14 Amazons, Lu refused to let limitations define her. Her unvarnished recollections are paired with rare archival footage as collaborators Ang Lee and Alan Chow reveal how she opened doors across two continents. Through her journey from Beijing opera training to commanding screens in The Last Emperor and The Joy Luck Club, the film captures an artist who didn’t just break barriers but redefined them.
