MA – Cry of Silence
New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
Inspired by true stories, MA is a poignant portrait of awakening political consciousness under ruthless oppression among workers protesting inhumane conditions at a tyrannical factory.
Drawing inspiration from a dire reality, The Maw Naing delivers a poignant and formally rigorous portrait of survival and awakening political consciousness under ruthless oppression. From the director whose 2014 debut The Monk marked Myanmar cinema’s return to international festivals after decades of absence, MA – Cry of Silence follows Mi-Thet, a teen garment worker navigating post-coup life, in which blackouts, military violence, and economic exploitation define everyday existence. As conditions in her factory worsen, her coworkers call for a strike over sexual harassment and unpaid wages, but Mi-Thet remains cautious, trapped between financial duty to her family and the risks of resistance. Menace lingers off-screen, conveyed through half-seen silhouettes, flickering lights, distant gunshots, and furtively shared cellphone images of life under the military junta. With restraint and urgency, MA – Cry of Silence quietly indicts the system while illuminating the humanity of its characters. It doesn’t cry out—it simmers, capturing both the spirit and resilience of a generation forced to endure the unendurable.
