My Friend An Delie
New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
Two estranged childhood friends journey to their wintry hometown for a funeral, and as they let down their defenses, a weighty past begins to emerge.
Actor Dong Zijian directs and stars in this haunting debut about the shadows cast over adult lives by childhood pain. When Li Mo returns to his icy Northeastern hometown after his father’s death, he encounters his estranged childhood friend An Delie on the flight—but the other man claims not to recognize him. As their story unspools across parallel timelines, the quiet ache of memory is juxtaposed with the tension of the wintry reunion, gradually revealing a buried trauma that still haunts both men. Flashbacks to their youthful bond are tender and raw, but the adult road trip—fraught with evasions and silences—unfolds with eerie unease. Dong and costar Liu Haoran deliver subtle but powerful performances that add depth to this atmospheric tale of grief, loss, and survival.
