In this cult film classic, which inspired so many other wrestling productions in its wake with its sui generis combination of exciting fight sequences, clever special effects, and sense of humor, El Santo is tasked with thwarting a group of lady vampires from kidnapping a professor’s daughter and marrying her to the devil.
Wrestling culture was wildly popular in the 1950s. By the following decade, it was a full-fledged phenomenon that cinema capitalized on with lucha libre films, which mixed the sport’s intense fairground spectacle with the mystery enshrined by its satin-masked marquee names, who transformed into superheroes battling evil—human or supernatural—in films that embraced a wild combination of genres and cinematic influences. Perhaps no other figure epitomized this brand of Mexican wrestler cinema more than the ever-charismatic Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, better known by his ring name El Santo. La cultura de la lucha libre era muy popular en los años cincuenta. Para la siguiente década, era ya todo un gran fenómeno que el cine aprovechó con las películas que mezclaban el intenso espectáculo de feria de este deporte con el misterio que encerraban sus nombres de marquesina enmascarados de satín, que se transformaban en superhéroes que luchaban contra el mal—humano o sobrenatural—en películas que abarcaban una salvaje combinación de géneros e influencias cinematográficas. Quizás ninguna otra figura personificó mejor este tipo de cine de luchadores mexicanos que el siempre carismático Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, más conocido por su nombre en el cuadrilátero, El Santo. En este clásico del cine de culto, que inspiró a muchas otras producciones con su sui generis combinación de emocionantes secuencias de lucha, ingeniosos efectos especiales y sentido del humor, El Santo tiene la misión de impedir que un grupo de vampiresas secuestre a la hija de un profesor y la case con el diablo.
