The Secret House
New York Asian Film Festival 2025
July 11 - 24, 2025
A Korean family starts life anew in a sprawling house in rural Taiwan, befriending a beguiling young neighbor (Vivian Sung), but their past catches up with them sooner than they expected.
A mother and her four children flee their homeland of Korea, leaving behind a traumatic secret to start life anew in a sprawling house in rural Taiwan, where she grew up. Soon after arriving, the kids are befriended by Ri Hwa, a beguiling young local woman (Vivian Sung) who leads them on joyful countryside excursions. As the eldest son Sung Min and Ri Hwa develop feelings for each other, the family’s shady Korean realtor aggressively pursues Ri Hwa for himself while also poking his nose around Sung Min’s family affairs. Meanwhile, a dark specter from the family’s past suddenly reappears, embroiling them in an eruption of violence and intrigue. As further tragedy strikes, Sung Min must protect his family from the prying eyes of outsiders at all costs. This dynamic remake of the 2017 psychological thriller Marrowbone features evocative cinematography, eloquent production design, and riveting performances that render each twist both shocking and sublime.
