On this week’s episode of our podcast, we’re sharing three highlights from this year’s New York Film Festival. First, you’ll hear an excerpt from Paul Thomas Anderson’s Q&A after the world premiere of his new documentary Junun, which is now available exclusively on mubi.com; after that, you’ll hear Kate Winslet join festival director Kent Jones for an intimate conversation about her life and career; and finally, we’re sharing a live discussion with documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras, who joined collaborators Charlotte Cook and AJ Schnack to talk about Field of Vision, a series of short-form documentaries being commissioned for online publication on “The Intercept.” The event was part of our NYFF Live series of free talks, sponsored by HBO®.
Paul Thomas Anderson joined us at the festival to present the world premiere of his new documentary Junun, which chronicles Shye Ben Tzur, Jonny Greenwood, and 19 local musicians as they record an album in the Mehrangarh Fort in northern India. The film, a breathtaking aural and visual experience, was followed by a post-film Q&A with Anderson.
During this year’s festival, we celebrated the career of Kate Winslet with our annual “An Evening With…” fundraising event. It featured dinner and an intimate conversation. In her discussion with Kent Jones, she traced the entirety of her illustrious career, starting with her breakthrough performance in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, all the way up to her latest critically lauded role in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, which was the festival’s centerpiece selection.
In the last part of this week’s episode, Laura Poitras talks about her latest project, Field of Vision, a series of short documentaries she has produced for Jeremy Scahill and Glenn Greenwald’s publication, The Intercept. Poitras joined collaborators Charlotte Cook and AJ Schnack to discuss the origins of the project, the increasing importance of short-form media, and their distinct approach to the documentary form.
