With the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, Chinese soldiers in the British Forces were left to fend for themselves. One of them, Chiu (Hong Kong veteran actor Gordon Lam Ka Tung in another indelible role), has found a precarious living in the underworld. One night, he invites triad payback by agreeing to store a cocaine haul for Mani, a South Asian forced into drug-running by a lack of job prospects (despite having a Hong Kong ID). By the time the two men realize they’ve both double-crossed the same kingpin, they’ve bonded over their shared plights as leftovers from the colonial past. Then all hell breaks loose, testing their newfound loyalties. Actor Chan Kin Long (My Prince Edward, NYAFF 2020) makes his directorial debut with this gritty bromance, an exciting genre thriller and deeply poignant tale of personal loyalty with a formally astonishing final sequence that takes it to a whole nother level.
