Returning to the exploration of gender relations that worked so well in The African Queen, Huston’s World War II drama finds Robert Mitchum as rough-hewn Marine Corporal Allison and Deborah Kerr as Sister Angela, a novice nun preparing to take her final vows. Through a chain of circumstances, they find themselves marooned on an island in the South Pacific occupied by Japanese soldiers, struggling to stay alive though outmatched and outnumbered. The star chemistry is unmistakable; Mitchum would cite Allison as his favorite role, and would make three more films with Kerr.
