Humphrey Bogart returns to reluctant hero mode as a former Army major paying respects to a friend’s widow (Lauren Bacall) and father (Lionel Barrymore) at their ramshackle Florida hotel. With a hurricane gathering force outside, the trio find themselves the hostages of a Capone-like gangster on the lam (Edward G. Robinson) and his henchmen. Adapted by Huston and Richard Brooks from Maxwell Anderson’s play, Key Largo marks the fourth and final pairing of Bogie and Bacall, and features the climax Howard Hawks was unable to use on the couple’s first teaming, To Have and Have Not.
