Huston recruited a star-studded lineup of international soccer stars, headlined by the legendary Pelé, to appear in his must-be-seen-to-be-believed mash-up of the sports movie and the POW escape thriller. Victory includes the incredible sight of Michael Caine, as a captured British captain, and Max von Sydow, as a kindly German officer, finding common ground over their shared status as onetime pro footballers. But the movie’s highlight is, without a doubt, the climactic Allied/Axis soccer match, during which Caine’s team of POWs—including Sylvester Stallone as a hotheaded American— find themselves faced with an impossible choice: escape or win?
