How do I renew my membership?
Renew your membership online (link here) (recommended method), via regular mail, or by calling the Membership Desk at 212-875-5620. When renewing online, please make sure you are logged in using the email address associated with your existing membership.
How do I check the status of my existing membership?
Log into your account using the email address associated with your membership and visit the “Manage My Account” section at the top of your log-in page.
I want to change my level of membership. How do I do that?
To change your level of membership, please contact the Membership Desk at 212-875-5620. A member of the Development team can answer specific questions about upgrading your membership. Changes will then go into effect immediately.
What is New Wave and how can I join?
New Wave is the Film Society’s Young Members program for film lovers in their 20s and 30s. You can learn more about New Wave program benefits online here. There are many events and screenings that take place throughout the year exclusively for New Wave members.
How can I purchase a gift membership?
Gift memberships can be purchased by completing a form in person at the box office or online here. In the dropdown menu that appears, please make sure you are selecting levels with “Gift” at the beginning. You can also contact the Membership Desk at email@example.com or 212-875-5620.
What kind of support is provided by the Member or Patron Desk?
If you are a current Member or Patron, the Member or Patron desk can assist you with questions about your membership and benefits. General questions about Film Society screenings and tickets should be directed to the box office. Full information on box office hours and locations can be found here.

Why should I become a member or patron of the Film Society?
One of the biggest reasons for joining as a Member of the Film Society is for access to the lowest price on movie tickets. Member priced tickets are always at least $5 off every film and special event when compared to the general public price. Another major reason for becoming a Film Society member is early access to seats at the prestigious New York Film Festival (available to Contributor level members and above). In fact, members receive early ticket access to all film festivals hosted here, year-round. Finally, the Film Society is a nonprofit, meaning your membership support acts as a charitable contribution. However, there are many other benefits to becoming a member! Do members get free tickets to see movies?
Yes! Members receive free (complimentary) tickets to eligible Film Society screenings beginning at the Contributor level. Along with tickets, members at this level and above also receive complimentary concessions at all Film Society theaters. Members also receive special invitations to screenings year-round.
How do I use my complimentary screening tickets?
Members receive a punch card to redeem complimentary tickets in person at the box office. These tickets can also be redeemed by calling or emailing the Membership Desk (firstname.lastname@example.org, 212-875-5620).
Patrons should contact the Patrons Desk directly to redeem their complimentary tickets (email@example.com, 212-875-5668). Hours and contact information for both can be found on the back of your membership/patron card. Box office staff can also assist if the Membership or Patrons desks are not available.
Which films are eligible for free tickets?
Complimentary tickets can be redeemed for series including Film Comment Selects, Art of the Real, New York African Film Festival, Open Roads: New Italian Cinema and New York Asian Film Festival. They can also be used for retrospectives and repertory films. Information on eligible programs will be announced via the Members-only email newsletter. Please note that complimentary tickets cannot be used for first runs, special events, or the following festivals:
- New York Jewish Film Festival
- Rendez-Vous with French Cinema
- New Directors/New Films
- New York Film Festival
What is the member discounted ticket price?
Tickets for festivals and special events may vary, but first run prices are generally as follows:
- $10 Members
- $12 Students, Seniors, and Persons with Disabilities
- $15 General Public
Is my membership tax-deductible?
A portion of your membership is tax-deductible. The tax-deduction amount can be found in the membership/patron brochure and on the acknowledgement letter that was provided with your card.
I received an invitation to special Member or Patron event. Do I have to RSVP?
Yes, RSVP instructions will be in the email invitation. Film Society venues have limited seating, and events do fill up, so please make sure to RSVP in advance!
I responded to an invitation but didn’t get a confirmation.

I lost or haven’t received my membership card. Can I still use my benefits?
Yes, you have full access to all of your member benefits even if you don’t have a card. Log-in to your account on our website to order tickets online at the member rate. The box office, Patron Desk, and Membership Desks can also help retrieve your Member ID number to use when you visit us in person. It typically takes 7-10 days for members and patrons to receive their membership materials after joining or renewing. If you haven’t received a card within two weeks of your order, or need a replacement, email email@example.com with the subject “Missing Membership Card”.
I haven’t been receiving Film Society emails or announcements.
Please start with the following steps:
- Check your email settings to make sure that the “filmlinc.org” domain is not blocked by your email server, and check your “blocked recipients” list. If any of our email addresses are in this list, please remove them from your spam/blocked lists.
- Check your spam folder. If you do see any of our emails in your spam folder, mark them as “not spam” which will move the message to your inbox. Marking the message as not spam tells the server that a mistake has been made and that you should be receiving these emails in the future.
- Also, please sign up specifically for the newsletters you want to receive on the Film Society website here. This will ensure we are using your current email address.
- If you have tried all of these steps and are still having an issue, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do I know if I have an online account?
If you have previously purchased tickets, received our newsletter, are a current member or patron, you have an online account! Please log in using the email address that you use to receive email communications from the Film Society. Members and Patrons will automatically begin seeing the Member ticket price populate under all screenings once logged in. If you need to reset your password, please select the “Forgot Your Password?” link. If it’s still not working, email email@example.com or call 212-875-5620 and we can manually reset your account.
I’m having trouble logging in to my member account on the Film Society website.

I don’t see the member ticket prices online. What do I do?
Please make sure that you are logged in to your account. If you are still not seeing member prices online, it may be that your membership has expired or that you are logged in using an email address that does not have a membership attached to it. Please contact email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org to renew a lapsed membership, or to confirm which email address is attached to your membership.

How frequently do print issues of Film Comment get published?
Film Comment is a bi-monthly magazine. New issues are published in January, March, May, July, September and November.
When will I start receiving my Film Comment subscription?
This depends on when you purchase or renew your membership. Film Comment is distributed on a bi-monthly basis, meaning it could take two months for your first issue to arrive.
I’m not receiving Film Comment. Who should I contact?
