The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced that Academy Award-nominee Catherine Deneuve will be honored at the 39th Annual Chaplin Award Gala on the evening of Monday, April 2, 2012 at Alice Tully Hall. The event will be attended by a host of notable guests and celebrities honoring the international film legend’s groundbreaking career and will feature film and interview clips culminating in the presentation of The Chaplin Award.

Susan Sarandon will act as Honorary Chair for this year’s Gala, and the initial presenter lineup includes Martin Scorsese, Chiara Mastroianni, François Ozon, and James Gray.

There have been few actors in the history of cinema with careers that compare to that of Catherine Deneuve. For five decades, she has performed in films by a veritable Who’s Who of international directors: Roman Polanski, Jacques Demy, François Truffaut, Luis Buñuel, Manoel de Oliveira, and Raul Ruiz, among many others. Today, rather than rest on her extraordinary achievements, she continues to challenge herself and expand her art, lending her talents and prestige to works by exciting, cutting-edge filmmakers such as Arnaud Desplechin, Leos Carax and Philippe Garrel. In honoring Catherine Deneuve, we celebrate a cinema that is bold, thoughtful, and deeply engaging.

The Film Society’s Annual Gala began in 1972 and honored Charles Chaplin – who returned to the US from exile to accept the commendation. Since then, the award has been renamed for Chaplin, and has honored many of the film industry’s most notable talents, including Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Laurence Olivier, Federico Fellini, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, James Stewart, Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Michael Douglas and most recently, Sidney Poitier.
