The Close-Up: Sofia Coppola Talks Filmmaking in 2013

On this week’s podcast, we’re celebrating from afar the premiere of Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. It marks Coppola’s first theatrical release since 2013’s The Bling Ring, which was based on the true story of a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who used the Internet to track celebrities and break into their homes.

Back in 2013, on the occasion of that film’s release, we welcomed Sofia Coppola to one of our Free Talks, which are sponsored by HBO. In front of a packed house, the filmmaker discussed her approach to the source material, her experience shooting on digital for the first time, working with the late great cinematographer Harris Savides; and much more. The conversation was moderated by the Director of the New York Film Festival, Kent Jones.
