Alfonso Cuarón received the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film prize at the 66th DGA Awards Saturday, giving the Mexican-born director added momentum for an Oscar in March. His film Gravity also won at last weekend's Producers Guild Awards where it tied with NYFF51 debut 12 Years A Slave for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures
Cuarón won the Director prize at the Golden Globes while 12 Years A Slave won in the Motion Picture, Drama category. There have been only a few occasions that a DGA and PGA winner has not gone on to win Best Picture, though with a PGA tie this year, the prognosticators don't have a clear parallel.
Jehane Noujaim won the prize in the director category for NYFF51 feature The Square. Noujaim won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for Startup.com in 2001 (together with Chris Hegedus) and was also nominated in this category in 2004 for Control Room. The Square is also an Oscar nominee in the non-fiction category.
In other DGA prizes, Steven Soderbergh's HBO-produced movie Behind the Candelabra won the group's Outstanding Director Achievement in Movies for Television and Mini-Series prize. Soderbergh was previously nominated in 2000 in the Feature Film category for both Erin Brockovich and Traffic. Soderbergh also received this year’s Robert B. Aldrich Service Award for extraordinary service to the DGA and its membership.
Jane Lynch hosted the 66th Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
