Filmmakers are storytellers, so it's no surprise that they love to talk! One of today’s highlights is sure to be our HBO Directors Dialogue with Frederick Wiseman at 1:00pm at the Bruno Walter Auditorium. (Rush tickets available!) The 83 year old master of direct cinema will talk about his vast body of work and his new film At Berkeley, which played to a sold-out crowd yesterday and opens at Film Society on November 8.
If that's not enough hot air for you, our free series of NYFF Live talks in the Amphitheater starts tonight with conversations with Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son) and several directors from our Motion Portraits section—Joaquim Pinto (What Now? Remind Me), Pacho Velez (Manakamana) and Mitra Farahani (Fifi Howls from Happiness). These events are open to the public on a space available basis.
After a rollicking first day, Convergence continues with interactive experiences like The Cosmonaut, keynote speakers like Elaine McMillion, the director of acclaimed transmedia doc Hollow, and even a live concert from indie filmmaker Cory McAbee in conjunction with his new project Captain Ahab's Motorcycle Club. NYFF's new Emerging Artists section gets started tonight with the premiere of a new film by British social realist filmmaker Joanna Hogg. Hogg will be in person for a Q&A following the 7:00pm screening of her minimalist character study Exhibition (rush tickets available!). The film won praise at Locarno, where it competed for the Golden Leopard. Tomorrow, you can catch up on Hogg's first two films, Unrelated and Archipelago, both with Q&As.
James Franco's Child of God
Today’s Official Selection premieres include the latest by actor-turned-filmmaker James Franco. Child of God is an adaption of the 1973 Cormac McCarthy novel and tells the story of a disturbed man who is sent away from his hometown in Louisiana and whose secluded life in the woods leads him to a strange predilection.
Hong Sang-soo’s Nobody’s Daughter Haewon explores the loneliness of a South Korean student who feels lost after her mother moves to Canada. The film was beloved by critics at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it vied for the Golden Bear. Rush tickets are available for the 9:00pm screening!
Lav Diaz’s Norte, the End of History is only the second Filipino production to screen in the Main Slate at the New York Film Festival and explores Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment in a very unique way.
Mark Levinson's Particle Fever
Another section of our Spotlight on Documentaries gets under way today, this one called Applied Science. Technology fans and the Big Brother paranoid won't want to miss Google and the World Brain by Ben Lewis, which explores the Google Library project and its aim to digitize every book ever written.
Particle Fever by Mark Levinson takes us to the CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, capturing the huge effort that went into building the longest super-collider in the world and the quest to emulate the beginning of the universe.
Last, but not least, actor/producer Gael GarcĂa Bernal brings his latest production, Marc Silver's Who Is Dayani Cristal?, to NYFF51. The documentary scrutinizes hotly-debated immigration issues, following the work of anthropologists who helps Bernal in trying to identify the remains of a body in the Arizona desert.
