Whether you and your family are off from work, school or both this holiday season, spend some time at the Film Society, where our schedule will still be packed with New Releases, Family Films and events.
Albert Nobbs is now playing at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center in a one-week limited engagement ending December 27. Glenn Close, who recently received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for her performanc in the the titular role, plays a woman passing as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Ireland. A. O. Scott of the New York Times praised the film, saying: “Albert Nobbs explores the complications with a light and sensitive touch. Ms. McTeer’s sly, exuberant performance is a pure delight, and the counterpoint between her physical expressiveness and Ms. Close’s tightly coiled reserve is a marvel to behold.”
We will also be showing several new and classic films that are fun for the whole family. The charming and mystical Miss Minoes, which tells the story of a cat that turns into a young woman and helps a cub reporter with tips from her network of feline friends, will run December 23 – January 2 in the Film Center's Amphitheater at discount prices. The New York Times made the film a critics' pick, calling it “a pleasantly quirky, family-friendly fable with lots of meowing.”
In addition, our ongoing series of Family Films continues with classics like Mary Poppins starring Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke (December 24 – 30) and the whimsical Bedknobs and Broomsticks starring Angela Lansbury (December 31). A Trip to the Moon and other shorts by George Méliès, which were featured in Martin Scorsese's Oscar-buzzed and NYFF-previewed Hugo, will play December 31 and January 1. For the more adventurous family, the 1985 sci-fi children’s caper Explorers, featuring early performances from Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix, plays January 1. All films in our Family Films series play in the Film Center's Amphitheater and tickets are $6 for everyone.
To round out our year-end schedule we've got two much-anticipated new releases opening in the coming weeks. Pina, Wim Wender’s stunning 3D documentary paying tribute to legendary choreographer Pina Bausch, comes the Walter Reade Theater for an extended run starting December 23. A few days later the highly buzzed indie Pariah, which took home prizes at the Sundance Film Festival and the Gotham Awards, will open at the Film Center. Producer Nekisa Cooper, actor Pernell Walker, and breakout star Adepero Oduye will be in person for a Q&A following the December 29, 6:20pm show!
