The Close-Up: Alexander Payne On Cinema

On this week’s episode of our podcast we’re bringing you a special conversation with filmmaker Alexander Payne. His 2011 film The Descendants, starring George Clooney, had its premiere as the the closing night selection at the 49th New York Film Festival before going on to win the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and receive four other nominations, including Best Picture.

During the festival that year, Payne took part in one of our live “On Cinema” conversations, in which he spoke in-depth about his cinematic influences, from Antonioni to Kurosawa. The evening was moderated by our then Director of the New York Film Festival, Richard Peña.
