Nonfiction will once again take center stage at the upcoming True/False Film Festival. Consistently a favorite of industry members and filmmakers working in the documentary world, this year's 10th edition will feature over three dozen features including secret screenings as well as other events February 28 – March 3 in Columbia, MO.
Festival favorites from Sundance, IDFA and Toronto are among the titles frequently screened at True/False. After Tiller, Blackfish, Computer Chess, Dirty Wars and Who Is Dayani Cristal are among the films hailing from Sundance.
This year's round of panels include major personalities from documentary. Filmmaker David France, whose film How To Survive a Plague (NDNF '12) is up for an Oscar, will moderate a panel exploring editing, based on French director Jean-Luc Godard's famous utterance, “Cinema is truth 24 times a second and every cut is a lie.”
Veteran doc makers Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar (A Lion in the House) will share their experiences from “an intense year” creating documentary for the internet and Steve James (The War Tapes), Sebastian Junger (Which Way is the Front Line from Here?), Kirby Dick (Invisible War) and Rick Rowley (Dirty Wars) will discuss the challenge filming subjects in the military in their panel, “Military Secrets: Filming the Armed Forces.” And narrative filmmakers Sarah Polley (Stories We Tell), Sarah Gavron (Village at the End of the World) and Josh Marston (Maria Full of Grace) will discuss their turns at nonfiction.
In addition to screenings and panels, True/False features concerts and its own version of a costume parade, the March March.
