12 Years A Slave was the surprising winner of Best Motion Picture, Drama Sunday night at the Golden Globes. The win seemed to surprise director Steve McQueen who accepted the prize at the event in Beverly Hills, CA. “I'm a little bit in shock,” said the filmmaker who was flanked by his actors at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. After making a round of “thank yous,” asking his actors who he needs to acknowledge, he saved his final thank you for Brad Pitt. “Thank you Brad Pitt, without you this wold have never been made,” he said. Less of a surprise win was American Hustle, which won the Golden Globe for Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. “The wonderful benefits of the motion picture business is that we get to make films about people,” said producer Charles Roven, accepting the award at the 71st annual event. “My producing partners and I have the privilege of telling this particular story about the art of survival, resilience and reinvention.”
Alfonso CuarĂłn took the Director award Sunday night for Gravity. The Mexican-born director joked about his accent, thanking actresss Sandra Bullock for not leaving the production when he tripped up on his English. “Because of my thick accent, the actors did what they thought I said instead of what I said. Sandra, you are the most amazing person ever. Thank you for not quitting when I said, 'Sandra, I'm going to give you herpes' instead of 'Sandra, I'm going to give you an ear piece.' It's a true story…” Muchas gracias…”
Italian director Paolo Sorrentino made a quick speech on stage, accepting the Foreign-Language prize for his film The Great Beauty. “Thank you to Italy. It's a crazy country but very beautiful,” he said.
Dallas Buyers Club picked up two wins at the event, winning Supporting Actor for Jared Leto and Actor, Drama for Matthew McConaughey. Leto joked that he didn't use prosthetics for his “tiny Brazilian bubble butt,” and said the win was a nice return motion picture acting. “This is incredible. I didn't make a film for almost six years. I was pursuing other dreams and it's more than an honor to come back and have this. And to the Rayons of the world, thanks for the inspiration.” Later in the night, Matthew McConaughey turned on the Southern charm as he accepted his prize. “Alright alright alright. This is unexpected, but graciously accepted.” He thanked his fellow nominees and noted the film had been 20 years in the making. “Nobody wanted to put up money for it. I'm glad it got passed so many times because then it wouldn't have come to me. This film was never about dying, it's about living and to that I say 'Just Keep.'”
Leonardo DiCaprio won the Best Actor prize in Musical or Comedy for The Wolf of Wall Street, paying tribute to director Martin Scorsese who he said will be remembered as one of the best filmmakers of all time. He also gave a kind shout out to his fellow nominee Bruce Dern: “Wow, this is an incredible honor, thank you. I would never have guessed I'd win best Actor for a comedy. If any young actor wants to follow the filmography of a great actor, take a look at Bruce Dern's work.”
Cate Blanchett, not surprisingly, took the prize in the Actress, Drama category for her role in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine. The actress, who is all but guaranteed an Oscar nomination later this week, paid tribute to Woody Allen, who was a no-show for the Golden Globe's Cecil B. DeMille Award. “I had a few vodkas under my belt and here we are. I went to the Magic Castle with my children today and that was a weird experience. It's impossible to approach good work without working with good people. Woody writes and directs these things with alarming regularity. He always assembles such extraordinary ensembles and this one was one of the best.”
