We were thrilled to welcome director Joanna Arnow, cast members Alysia Reiner, Parish Bradley, and Peter Vack, and producers Graham Swon and Pierce Varous to NYFF61 to discuss The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed in a conversation moderated by NYFF Currents Programmer Tyler Wilson.
In her unsparing, acerbically funny feature debut, Joanna Arnow stars as an emotionally detached young Brooklynite drifting through unremarkable days and nights, which include an on-again-off-again BDSM relationship with a mildly disinterested older dom. Arnow finds a core of poignant truth about the ways people search for those elusive, ever-shifting things like emotional happiness and sexual gratification.

In anticipation of her film premiering at NYFF61, we asked Arnow a few questions about what it means to have her film selected for this year’s festival.
Do you have a favorite NYFF memory?
Another filmmaker told me I was bourgeois for being overly excited about the Tavern on the Green party.
What are some of your favorite films that have screened at NYFF?
I loved Toni Erdmann—it’s one of my all-time favorites.
What does it mean for you to have your film at NYFF?
I’m from Brooklyn and grew up going to Lincoln Center, so it means a lot to show my film at a venue I’ve respected for as long as I can remember. My shorts screened at the festival in 2015 and 2019—it’s taken a while to get a first fiction feature off the ground, and really appreciate being able to show it at NYFF in such a great lineup.
What was something you learned while working on your film?
I feel lucky to have been able to make this film and work with this great cast and crew. I learned that making the film is the good part.
What do you want audiences to know about your film?
It’s a comedy and under 90 minutes!
