On this week’s podcast, we’re sharing a conversation with provocateur Nicolas Winding Refn. The Danish director’s latest thriller, The Neon Demon, opened in select theaters last weekend. Subscribe to The Close-Up on iTunes so you never miss an episode. If you like what you hear, leave us a review!

The Neon Demon stars Elle Fanning as an aspiring teenage model who moves to Los Angeles, where her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women out to get what she has by any means necessary. Like Refn’s previous two films (Drive and Only God Forgives), it divided audiences at Cannes, with some critics reportedly booing the screening and others praising its vivid style. “Prettiness and brutality both seep from the pores of the movie,” said Anthony Lane of The New Yorker.

Refn joined us last week for one of our HBO-sponsored Free Talks, where he discussed the making of the film, his influences, and his collaboration with Fanning. The evening was moderated by critic Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist.
